Ethnic Minority Groups In The Philippines

A Kalinga Native

About 60 ethnic minority groups in the Philippines exist and still practice their traditional customs. Each group differs from each other according to how their ethnic roots were preserved. They are located in most areas of central and northern Luzon, Mindoro, Palawan, western Mindanao and Sulu Islands. Not being subdued to any colonial rule, they were able to preserve their ethnic practices freely. Most of them have their own dialects and ethnic writing different from what ordinary Filipino use. Because of their almost inaccessible locations, the government of the Philippines have designated several agencies to help them adapt to the present way of life. Livelihood trainings and other forms of education were conducted to enhance their living conditions. Most of their artworks become popular, not only for its unique craftmanship but as well their adept use of materials and designs.

These minority groups are friendly and hospitable to visitors. Inviting strangers or even sharing food with them symbolize close relation and acceptance. As it is considered rude to refuse an offer, it is best to accept anything they offer to avoid confusion and rejection. It is however wise to have a guide when planning to visit any of these groups for translation and easier interaction.
